Twin-screw extrusion lines are primarily categorised into two main types based on the rotational direction and meshing configuration of the screws
Co-rotating twin-screw extruder:
Features: Both screws rotate in the same direction.
Advantages: Possesses exceptional self-cleaning capability (material is less prone to retention and decomposition), high shear rates, and outstanding distribution and dispersion mixing capabilities. Material traverses an '∞'-shaped channel between the screws, resulting in a narrow residence time distribution.
Applications: The most commonly employed type, extensively utilised for compounding and modification, venting and devolatilisation, and reactive extrusion.
Counter-rotating twin-screw extruder
Characteristics: Two screws rotate in opposite directions.
Advantages: Features forced conveying properties, strong pressure-building capability, high conveying efficiency, and relatively low energy consumption.
Classification:
Intermeshing type: Offers stable conveying capacity, used for profile extrusion (e.g., PVC pipes, profiles).
Non-intermeshing type: Superior mixing capability, though with reduced conveying and pressure-building capacity; commonly employed in reaction extrusion and material recycling.
